About Artful Penguin
Hello! I'm Artful Penguin, a hobbyist woodworker (mostly wood turning) based in Copenhagen, Denmark.
These pages are a display case for some of my work, for my own records and to show off to anyone who makes the mistake of showing even the least bit of interest in my hobby. If you're a fellow woodworker, I hope you find inspiration for your own projects.
In the daytime, I'm a software developer. Re-discovering woodworking after many years away from the workbench keeps me grounded, especially after a full day of thinking about code, bits and bytes.
I think of my work with wood as being very organic. Most often, I work with wood that I have found somewhere random, or has been given to me. So even though I do have a plan at the start of a project, that is rarely where things end up: Every piece of wood has it's own story, and surprises hidden inside that only turn up when I start working with the wood. Often, those surprises include cracks and rot, forcing you to stop, step back, re-think where we're going, and then find a new path forward. Many would find this frustrating, but in my experience, it is exactly those details that give the wood, and hence the project, amazing character.
The website is updated every few weeks with the latest ideas and experiments.
